Do online games trigger a new psychiatric disorder? – The Boston Globe

When the game turns out to be your addiction, which makes you lose your job and stop taking a shower, you need to quit.

people play wow and get addicted; say my friend, msdzero, seems so addicted and couldn’t stop himself to play the game everyday. He’s on level 70 right now, and I wonder whether he could actually quit or not

After read that news, I buzzed my friends who is playing WoW to get some information. Firstly, I contacted Wiwing, but he is too invested in his virtual life. I got no respond.

While not totally comprehensive, here is a list of how to get out from your World of Warcraft virtual life and start showering.

  1. Limit your game time to ONE hour per day. You have to learn to use computer responsibly. Limiting your time to get on game will drive you crazy. As a start, you will feel lost in real life and keep thinking about your game. If you are still feeling crazy, go to shower and start showering. In the bath, keep thinking about how this can change your habit.
  2. Set your own goal on REAL Life. Instead of playing WoW, you can set your own goal. 43things can be a great resource to do that. Set your own goal, set the reminder and you will be reminded everyday about your goal.
  3. Force yourself to go out for dinner. Going out for dinner is a great idea. Dating can reminds you how beautiful is life. Whether you already has a girl/boyfriend/husband/wife it will be a great moment to starts with.
  4. Stop looking for power/status/items. Gaining items, power, and status you need is the most addictive part of the game. So, keep yourself from this part.
  5. Share your situation with your friends or psychiater. ARE YOU KIDDING? You know I’m not. You are in trouble, realize it. And you need a friend to hear that from you. Your friends will be laughing off, but he/she will helps you. In the internet, It’s harder to controul your time, you need someone to interfere you when you over played.

    Is it really an “addiction” if you enjoy something with no adverse side-effects? I mean people throw the word addiction around too much in my opinion. And have you (author) played WoW? Thats not a argumentative comment it’s a genuine question.

    hahaha very funny. don’t worry about your english: the bad english makes it funnier!! and my chinese/japanese is non-existant, so critisizing you would be somewhat hypocritical.

    @Sy1n
    I’ve played Warcraft, DotA before and quit. I really enjoyed it that time, but I was getting much of troubles. I can’t handle myself, really, I spent day and night with that game. I’m so ashamed of myself and couldn’t see that I was in trouble.
